The West Highland White Terrier originates from Poltalloch, Scotland, and was then known as the Poltalloch Terrier and was later named the Roseneath Terrier, named immediately after the Duke of Argyll’s estate. The breed came about in the mid-19th century when a Scottish breeder in the Cairn Terrier whelped some white pups in his litter. Those pups had been selected and bred to obtain the West Highland White Terrier, which can be just a white Cairn. The West Highland was first shown inside the USA in 1906 and was initially recognized by the AKC in 1908. In 1909 the breed’s name was changed from the Roseneath Terrier to the West Highland White Terrier. Like the Cairn, the Westie was originally bred to control the population of rats, foxes, badgers, otters, and other vermin.
