Pug is originated in China during the Shang dynasty and was known as ‘Foo’ or ‘Fu’ dog at that time. Later, the Dutch traders brought pugs from China and returned to their home in Holland and then later to England. That is why at present, people also call Pugs Chinese pugs, Dutch bulldogs, Dutch mastiffs, or Mini Mastiffs.

The Pug is one of the oldest breeds identified these days, believed to have originated before 400 BC. There’s somewhat of a debate more than the origin of the Pug. Most researchers agree that the Pug originated from Asia and descended from a short-haired Pekingese. Another theory is it is actually the result of crossing a tiny Bulldog, while others speculate that it is a miniature kind of the French Mastiff ( Dogue de Bordeaux). The artist Hogarth had a Pug named “Trump” who he typically depicted in his functions. The breed became well known in the course of Victorian occasions in the 19th century. Tibetan monasteries kept Pugs as pets. The breed made its approach to Japan and Europe where it not only became a pet of royalty but also the official dog of the House of Orange in Holland. Prince William II owned Pugs. One particular dog in certain was mentioned to have saved his life in 1572 at Hermingny when the dog barked at approaching Spaniards alerting him of their presence. In France Napoleon’s wife, Josephine had a Pug named “Fortune”.
