The Papillon is among the oldest breeds of dog, using a recorded history in Europe going back nearly 700 years. The breed originally only had dropped ears and had been named the “painful nain” or “dwarf spaniel”. Significantly the breed’s development is known due to its depiction in paintings. This tiny breed is recognizable in the 13th by means of 15th-century Italian paintings in the Renaissance period. They were often painted on the laps of French and Spanish noblewomen. The dog was later known as the Continental Toy Spaniel, which can be the official name the FCI regular goes by. They had been at times referred to as just a Toy Spaniel.
