Beagle is a small to medium-sized dog that originated in Great Britain. The modern breed of Beagle evolved in the United States, and they tend to have a larger body and balanced appearance. The weight of standard Beagles is around 10-11 kg in males and 9-10 kg in females. The name ‘Beagle’ was adapted from the word in French ‘beguile’ with the meaning of the gape throat referring to the sound made by a group of dogs on the hunt.

Temperament:
The Beagle has an even temper and gentle disposition. Described in quite a few breed standards as “merry”, they’re amiable and frequently neither aggressive nor timid. They make poor guard dogs for this reason, though their tendency to bark or howl when confronted with the unfamiliar makes them superior watchdogs. In a 1985 study conducted by Ben and Lynette Hart, the Beagle was given the highest excitability rating, in addition to the Yorkshire Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer, West Highland White Terrier, and Fox Terrier. Beagles are intelligent but, as a result of becoming bred for the long chase, are single-minded and determined, which can make them tough to train. They may be commonly obedient, but is often tricky to recall when they’ve picked up a scent, and are very easily distracted by smells about them. They don’t normally feature in obedience trials; whilst they’re alert, respond nicely to food-reward training, and are eager to please, they’re readily bored or distracted. They are ranked 72nd in Stanley Coren’s The Intelligence of Dogs, as Coren areas them amongst the group with the lowest degrees of working/obedience intelligence. Coren’s scale, however, will not assess understanding, independence, or creativity. Beagles are great with children, and this is one particular of the causes they have developed into well-known family pets, but they’re pack animals and can be prone to separation anxiety. Not all Beagles will howl, but most will bark when confronted with strange circumstances, and some will bay (also referred to as “speaking”, “giving tongue”, or “opening”) when they catch the scent of the prospective quarry. They also generally get along properly with other dogs. They’re not demanding with regard to workout; their inbred stamina means they don’t easily tire when exercised, but they also don’t need to be worked to exhaustion prior to they will rest, although a standard workout helps ward off the weight acquired to which the breed is prone.
The Beagle is susceptible to glaucoma, epilepsy, intervertebral disc disease, and congenital heart disease.
Life Expectancy:
The expected life span in the Beagle is 12-15 years.
Living Environment:
Beagles require companionship and each day exercise, preferably inside a fenced yard. Prone to barking and howling, Beagles do not make very good apartment dogs.
